About Dream Big Dance

MISSION AND VISION

Dream Big Dance intends to incite transformative change in faith communities through the inclusion of individuals with disabilities in all aspects of the faith community. We intentionally connect faith communities with the disability community in a safe environment.

WHAT IS IT?

Dream Big Dance is a collaborative effort between multiple faith communities to provide a dance with a prom-like atmosphere for individuals with disabilities ages 16 and older. Many people with disabilities did not get to experience their homecoming dances or proms and Dream Big Dance is their opportunity to experience a dance of a lifetime. The dance is also an excellent way to get connected with people in your communities because we invite faith communities and volunteers from across the city to be at the dance with you.

OUR HISTORY

During the fall of 2014, Stephen Taylor, who was the director of the Special Needs Ministry at Mount Pisgah at the time, began exploring unique, but fun ways to engage with the disability community, particularly those ages 16 and older. He quickly realized the disability community loves to dance and to be in community with one another. The missing ingredient was an active, healthy engagement between faith communities and disability communities.

Hence the birth of the Dream Big Dance, which is to provide an opportunity for communities that otherwise, may never engage with one another to finally have a chance to meet in a safe environment.

Stephen wanted the dance to be a premier, annual event for the disability community. He also believed in the concept of collaboration between communities. The initial dance was on April 10, 2016, at Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church in Johns Creek and Johns Creek Civitan Club. The second dance was also held March 25, 2017, at Mount Pisgah UMC in collaboration with Victory Radio.

Since the dance continued to grow in popularity, Stephen realized the necessity of having to relocate the dance and also include other faith communities in the Dream Big Dance mission. He also decided to create more consistency by choosing to hold the dance on the first Saturday of May for all future dances.

The 2018 edition of the dance, which was also the largest dance ever held for the disability community in Atlanta, was held on May 5, 2018 at the Georgia Aquarium in collaboration with three faith communities: Johnson Ferry Baptist Church, Mount Pisgah UMC, and Mount Paran Church. Victory Radio would also continue to be an important component of the 2018 edition.

Wow! We just completed our fourth edition of Dream Big Dance and it was definitely in a galaxy far, far away! It was held on May 4, 2019 at the Southern Exchange Ballrooms and Star Wars was the theme of the dance. Once again three faith communities would headline the dance: Johnson Ferry Baptist Church, Mount Pisgah UMC, and Mount Paran Church. There were several other sponsors, which helped with the dance.

Dream Big Dance 202 is our fifth anniversary, and we are celebrating in multiple ways this year! The dance will be held in three different locations with different dates throughout the year! We are also going to be collecting formal gowns in multiple locations to distribute to attendees prior to Dream Big Dance.
