ABOUT DREAM BIG DANCE

MISSION AND VISION

Dream Big Dance intends to incite transformative change in faith communities through the inclusion of individuals with disabilities in all aspects of the faith community. We intentionally connect faith communities with the disability community in a safe environment.

WHAT IS IT?

Dream Big Dance provides a prom night type experience for individuals with disabilities ages 16 and older. Many people with disabilities did not get to experience their homecoming dances or proms, and Dream Big Dance is their opportunity to experience a dance of a lifetime. The dance is also an excellent way to make friends and connections with others in the community. Many members of different faith-based organizations from across the Atlanta area come to volunteer and be a part of this special event. The Big Dream Dance is held on the first Saturday of May every year.

OUR HISTORY

The first Big Dream Dance was held in 2016 and was founded by Stephen Taylor, former Director of Special Needs Ministry at Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church in Johns Creek, GA.  Stephen being deaf himself has always had a special place in his heart for members of the disability community. Stephen began exploring ways to engage those young adults ages 16 and over. He realized that everyone loves to dance, socialize, and be in fellowship with others. This missing ingredient was an active healthy engagement between faith communities and disability communities.

The Big Dream Dance was founded to provide an opportunity for communities that otherwise may never engage with one another to finally have a chance to meet in a safe environment.

Stephen wanted the dance to be a premier, annual event for adults with disabilites. He also believed in the concept of collaboration between communities. The initial dance was on April 10, 2016, at Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church in Johns Creek, and Johns Creek Civitan Club. The second dance was held March 25, 2017, at Mount Pisgah UMC in collaboration with Victory Radio.

The Dance has continued to grow every year in popularity, and Stephen realized the need to relocate the dance to a larger venue and to include other faith communities in the Dream Big Mission. At that time, the decision was made to hold the dance on the same day every year, the first Saturday in May.

The 2018 edition of the dance, which was also the largest dance as of yet held for the disability community in Atlanta, was held on May 5, 2018 at the Georgia Aquarium in collaboration with: Johnson Ferry Baptist Church, Mount Pisgah UMC, and Mount Paran Church. Victory Radio would also continue to be an important component of the 2018 edition.

The fourth edition of Dream Big Dance was held on May 4, 2019  and it was definitely in a galaxy far, far away! It was held at the Southern Exchange Ballrooms with a very popular Star Wars Theme. Once again three faith communities would headline the dance: Johnson Ferry Baptist Church, Mount Pisgah UMC, and Mount Paran Church. Many sponsors and volunteers were a part of this special night.

The year 2020 has been such a strange and frustrating time. We were not able to have any of our scheduled dances, but we are looking forward to 2021! The dance will be held in three different locations with different dates throughout the year! We will be collecting formal gowns in multiple locations to distribute to attendees prior to Dream Big Dance.
